UK 'slightly happier than last year'

A UK-wide well-being survey has found "small improvements" in people's happiness over the year.

The proportion of people rating their life satisfaction as seven or more out of 10 rose from 75.9% to 77.0%, the Office for National Statistics said.

It said the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee may have "influenced people's assessment of their... well-being".

The survey is carried out to help the government develop policies to improve people's well-being.

The ONS also compared its data from 2007-2011 with European Union figures for that period and found that the British were happier than the French, Germans and Italians.

The UK ranked 10th for life satisfaction out of 27 EU countries, according to the European Quality of Life Survey, with an average rating of 7.3 out of 10 in 2011.

The ONS said the UK's rating was unchanged between 2007 and 2011, showing a "picture of stability" in contrast to a decline in happiness in many EU countries.

Most content

It also showed a small reduction in anxiety levels, with the proportion of people rating their anxiety at a higher level of six or more out of 10 falling from 21.8% to 20.9%.

Women rated their anxiety levels higher than men. The average anxiety rating for women is 3.1 compared with 2.9 for men.

Yet on balance, women were found to have higher life satisfaction, consider their activities to be more worthwhile and rate their happiness slightly higher than men.

People aged 45 to 54 were the most dissatisfied, while younger people rated their happiness above average and retired people were the most content age group.

Married couples or those in civil partnerships rated their life satisfaction highest, with the average score at 7.8 out of 10. The ONS pointed out that this was higher than for cohabiting couples who reported an average of 7.6 out of 10.

Widowed and single people rated their life satisfaction lower than those in couples, at an average of 7.3 out of 10 and 7.2 out of 10 respectively.

Bank holiday

The ONS said the reason for the small uptick in the nation's well-being between 2011/12 and 2012/13 was "not fully understood at this stage".

Though measuring happiness was "complex", the ONS said the factors most associated with personal well-being were health, employment situation and relationship status.

The survey found no significant changes in average ratings for life satisfaction for any of the self-reported health groups or among unemployed people - despite improvements in the labour market.

It did however identify an improvement in average ratings for life satisfaction among people in all relationship statuses.

The ONS said that over the past year, the UK had celebrated several special events, such as the Queen's Diamond Jubilee which included a special bank holiday and the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic games.

Glenn Everett, programme director for measuring national well-being at the ONS, said the events may have boosted well-being because they were perceived as "one-off", "once-in-a-lifetime" events.

"The other part is that Britain did well in the Olympics and the Paralympics," he said.

The first well-being survey was released by the ONS in 2012. Prime Minister David Cameron described it then as crucial to finding out what the government can do to "really improve lives" - but Labour ridiculed the survey as a "statement of the bleeding obvious".

The government maintained that it wanted to take into account quality of life alongside its "key priorities" of creating economic growth, jobs and opportunities.

A spokesman for the Cabinet Office said: "Finding out what will really improve lives and acting on it is important and having evidence will help us to find the best ways of doing so. Today's figures published by ONS are a welcome further step towards developing trusted and accepted national statistics for well-being to inform our decisions."

Laser Communications Set for Moon Mission - SpaceRef

An advanced laser system offering vastly faster data speeds is now ready for linking with spacecraft beyond our planet following a series of crucial ground tests. Later this year, ESA's observatory in Spain will use the laser to communicate with a NASA Moon orbiter.

The laboratory testing paves the way for a live space demonstration in October, once NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer - LADEE - begins orbiting the Moon.

LADEE carries a terminal that can transmit and receive pulses of laser light. ESA's Optical Ground Station on Tenerife will be upgraded with a complementary unit and, together with two US ground terminals, will relay data at unprecedented rates using infrared light beams at a wavelength similar to that used in fiber-optic cables on Earth.

"The testing went as planned, and while we identified a number of issues, we'll be ready for LADEE's mid-September launch," says Zoran Sodnik, manager for ESA's Lunar Optical Communication Link project.

"Our ground station will join two NASA stations communicating with the LADEE Moon mission, and we aim to demonstrate the readiness of optical communication for future missions to Mars or anywhere else in the Solar System."

Testing new European technology

The testing took place in July at a Zurich, Switzerland, facility owned by ESA's industrial partner RUAG and made use of a new detector and decoding system, a ranging system and a transmitter.

A NASA team, supported by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lincoln Laboratory and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, brought over their laser terminal simulator, while ESA together with RUAG and Axcon of Denmark set up the European equipment to test compatibility between the two sets of hardware.

"This interagency optical compatibility test was the first of its kind, and it established the uplink, downlink and the ranging measurement," says ESA's Klaus-Juergen Schulz, responsible for ground station systems at the European Space Operations Centre, Darmstadt.

The first laser link-up with LADEE is expected to be attempted four weeks after launch, around mid-October.

Laser pathways to future space communication

Laser communications at near-infrared wavelengths may be the way of the future when it comes to downloading massive amounts of data from spacecraft orbiting Earth, Mars or even more distant planets.

These units are lighter, smaller and need less power than today's radio systems, promising to cut mission costs and provide opportunities for new science payloads.

In addition, ESA has also developing satellite-to-satellite laser communications for its Alphasat and European Data Relay System missions (more information).

LADEE is currently scheduled to launch on September 6.

Microsoft patents futuristic transparent laptop display

Microsoft's drawing from its patent of a laptop with transparent display technology.

Your future computer may be able to do more than just detect your gestures and last longer on a charge. Microsoft has filed a patent for transparent display technology for laptops and mobile devices that can actually project holographic images right before your eyes.

In the patent?s claims, Microsoft describes a projection device that would be ?coupled to the mobile base for displaying the image,? which seems to be in reference to future cameras that will be built into devices. Additionally, the claims describe a transparent display that would come with a holographic optical element for directing images that are displayed by the projection device.

MORE: Don't be a Google Glasshole: 10 etiquette tips

The document describes various implementations of this type of technology, one of which could superimpose virtual images from augmented reality apps on to real-world environments. Microsoft hints that there could be a heads-up display accessory similar to Google Glass that would be used to navigate these apps.

?The mobile device may be used with pointing and telestration applications including but not limited to use as a portable heads-up display for an operator of the mobile device.?

The patent?s drawings depict a laptop with a projector in the keyboard deck. This component projects up through the notebook?s display panel and on to a surface beyond such as a wall. As shown in the drawing above, the user would look at the laptop?s display at the same angle and distance as you would when using a standard notebook, but the image would extend beyond the tangible screen.

This isn?t the first time we?ve heard of such plans from Microsoft, but the newly published patent shows that the company is pushing for this tech in laptops and mobile devices. Microsoft?s IllumiRoom concept for gaming details a similar system that would project images and scenes from the video game on your television onto the furniture and surfaces around you.

In a reportedly leaked Microsoft internal document from 2010, the company makes mention of an accessory called Kinect Shades that would accompany such a device, hinting that AR eyewear is in the works. Not too long ago, Microsoft posted a job listing that described telepresence technology for depicting virtual holograms in Skype conversations.

There?s no telling whether or not these technologies will hit the market, but the recently published patent is little short of a confirmation that Microsoft is diving deeper into perceptual computing.

Men Need X Chromosome To Make More Men (And Women)

60-Second Science

Genomic analysis of the human X chromosome shows that it evolved to have responsibilities in sperm production. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

It takes a Y chromosome to make a man. But that doesn't mean its counterpart, the X chromosome, plays no part. In fact, it has a big role in making sperm.

To study X evolution, researchers first sequenced the human chromosome more accurately than ever before. Then they compared the code to that of a mammal whose evolutionary lineage split from ours about 80 million years ago: the mouse.

It turns out that humans and mice share 95 percent of their X genes. This finding was no surprise. In the 1960s, biologist Susumu Ohno suggested the X chromosome would evolve slowly, and thus remain similar in most mammalian species. But some things did change over evolutionary time. Or rather, 144 things.

One-hundred-forty-four human X chromosome genes had no counterparts in mice. And these genes seemed to be constantly developing. Many of the genes remained dormant in females, only becoming active in tissues involved in sperm production. The study is in the journal Nature Genetics. [Jacob L. Mueller et al, Independent specialization of the human and mouse X chromosomes for the male germ line]

Clearly, the X chromosome Xceeds its feminine responsibilities. Which is Xcellent news for male fertility.

Gov. Rick Scott helps Golf Channel celebrate 88 new jobs

Gov. Rick Scott came to Orlando on Tuesday to help The Golf Channel celebrate the creation of 88 new jobs for which it received government incentives.

A spokesman for the Golf Channel said the network has added the new jobs primarily in digital media and had made a capital investment of $4.4 million.

Those figures exceed the requirements of two incentive deals the network made with Orlando and the state.

"The expansion has been consistent and steady but in the last couple of years since Golf Channel has been part of NBC Sports, we've really super-charged that growth," said Mike McCarley, president of NBC Golf Media. "Because of the pro-business, pro-growth environment that both the mayor and the governor have created, it's really helped us add more and more of the jobs to the Orlando area."

In exchange for creating 75 jobs and investing $1.9 million in capital improvements, the company is slated to receive $583,000 in government incentives under the Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund and the Quick Action Closing Fund, a discretionary pot of money controlled by the governor. It has also been approved for a $112,500 Quick Response Training Grant from Workforce Florida.

The jobs must have a minimum average annual salary of $75,000, not counting the value of benefits.

The popular cable TV network has been in expansion mode recently, including the construction of a new combination studio-newsroom earlier this year.

With a studio full of employees looking on, Scott praised the Golf Channel for its success and said the network's announcement brought Florida closer to adding the 700,000 jobs he promised during his campaign for governor three years ago.

"We're almost halfway there, with 333,000 jobs in two-and-a-half years," he said, flanked by economic development officials and politicians, including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. "I grew up in a family that struggled to have a job, so every time we announce jobs, it's a big deal, because more families can get to work."

Scott has made job creation the cornerstone both of his first term and for his re-election bid next year.

Kathy DeVault, director of strategic partnerships for the City of Orlando, said the positions were at risk of going to Stamford, Conn., where Golf Channel's parent company has a large presence.

Earlier Tuesday, Scott was in Flagler County to announce the expansion of Aveo Engineering, an electronics maker for the aerospace industry.

Scott said Aveo is planning a design and manufacturing facility in the county with 300 jobs and $7.5 million in capital investment.

Ask Slashdot: Should More Math and Equations Be Used In the Popular Press?

[unable to retrieve full-text content]raque writes "The NY Times recently published two op-eds in their Philosophy section, The Stone, discussing how Heisenberg's Uncertainty principle is abused. The second is a followup to the first. The author struggled to make clear his point and left the impression he was creating a strawman argument. In his followup he said he was avoiding equations because he was writing for a general audience. I replied to both articles, asking whether showing some basic equations would have worked better, allowing math to illustrate where metaphors struggled. Now I'm asking the same question to everyone on Slashdot. Would Dr. Callendar have been better off just diving in and dealing with Heisenberg and quantum mechanics using the tools that were developed for it?"

Angelina Jolie Highest Paid Actress - Business Insider

Angelina Jolie red carpet

AP/Joel Ryan

Angelina Jolie is back in action, topping Forbes' list of Hollywood's Highest Paid Actresses.

Despite not appearing in a major motion picture since "The Tourist," almost three years ago, Jolie racked up $33 million between June 2012 and June 2013.

In that time, she privately battled a major health issue. She?had a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carried a gene that made it 87% likely she would get breast cancer.

The Oscar-winning actress and philanthropist is up $13 million from last year.

Actress Kristen Stewart landed on the top spot in 2012, thanks to the "Twilight" franchise, which ended its theater run in November. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2" raked in more than $800 million worldwide.

Forbes predicts the vamp actress will slide off the list entirely next year, with the "Snow White and the Huntsman" sequel a ways away.

New to the list: Mila Kunis, who earned a combined $1 billion from "Ted" and "Oz: The Great and Powerful."

Here's the complete list of Hollywood's Highest Paid Actresses:

1. Angelina Jolie ? $33 million

2. Jennifer Lawrence ? $26 million

3. Kristen Stewart ? $22 million

4. Jennifer Aniston ? $20 million

5. Emma Roberts ? $16 million

6. Charlize Theron ? $15 million

7. Sandra Bullock ? $14 million

8. Natalie Portman ? $14 million

9. Mila Kunis ? $11 million

10. Julia Roberts ? $11 million

Arkadium creates data analytics tool for Windows 8 marketplace

In an effort to capitalize on the growing trends of the Windows 8 Store, casual and social game developer Arkadium has taken its first steps towards the construction of an analytics engine for its games.

The Mahjongg Dimensions developer was responsible for four of the launch titles on Windows 8 when the platform released last October, including Minesweeper and Taptiles.

With more than 15,000 games currently on the Windows 8 store, Arkadium has seen growth in the major expected gaming categories, including card, puzzle, action and sports games. However, unlike iOS or Android, as examples, Arkadium has found the Windows 8 platform lacking when it comes to real-time data visibility.

Arkadium?s first data has seen an increase of over 35% from January to April 2013 in total number of active users and daily gameplay sessions. Meanwhile, June contained the largest boost in Windows 8 games this year.

According to App Annie, popular Windows 8 games tend to remain in the Top 5 for 19 days at a time, while an app on iPad?s Top 5 list may only stay there for 7 days before falling off. What?s more, Windows 8 games tend to remain in the same ranking spot for roughly 3.5 days without movement.

?The major barriers we have now are the lack of user acquisition options and a robust analytics system that will allow us to promote and evolve our games further,? said Kenny Rosenblatt, CEO and Co-Founder of Arkadium. ??As a first-mover on Windows 8, we?re already spearheading a system that will provide new insights to ensure better quality and actionable learnings for our games and for the market.?

Arkadium?s analytics tool is currently in early beta. Developers interested in learning more or gaining access to the beta are encouraged to contact Arkadium directly.

Official: 8 Tunisian soldiers killed in ambush

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? Tunisia's presidential spokesman says gunmen ambushed an army unit patrolling in a mountainous region near the border with Algeria, killing eight soldiers.

Adnan Mancer told The Associated Press that the attack took place Monday on Jebel Chaambi, Tunisia's tallest mountain and a suspected hideout of al-Qaida-linked militants.

The army has been searching the mountainous region near the Algerian frontier since a patrol was hit by a roadside bomb in April.

On June 24, the army declared the mountain cleared of extremists in a campaign that cost three lives and left 27 soldiers injured.

In the course of its operation, the army discovered evidence suggesting an al-Qaida-linked movement supported by the local population had set up training camps in the area.

TALKIN' GOLF: Relics of my religion

While baseball might have been one of Annie Savoy?s religions in Bull Durham, golf is one of mine and why not?

It?s a world where everyone lives by the rules and cheating is the worse sin.

And when you break the rules, no questions asked: you accept the penalty. There is no jury, no attorneys, no plea-bargaining allowed.

Last week I was privileged to visit the Holy Land (The Country Club), a sanctuary of the entitled where cell phone are prohibited and everybody walks the golf course, unless you have a medical dispensation.

I was fortunate to view holy relics that were carefully handled with cotton gloves, just as you would a da Vinci or Michelangelo masterpiece.

There was a niblick, a jigger, a mashie-niblick and a mid-iron. They were the actually clubs Shia LaBeouf used to win the US Open in Brookline one hundred years ago.

It was a miraculous victory, especially when you realize these rudimentary clubs are as unforgiving as Vince Wilfork in spandex.

You play golf and never heard of a jigger or a sammy or a mid-iron?

Back in the day, when Mass was said in Latin, golf clubs were made out of wood and iron and were not numbered. They all had names.

    A jigger was a low-lofted iron used for bump-and-run shots; a mid-iron was similar to a 2-iron. A mashie was about a 5-iron and a mashie-niblick was similar to a 7-iron.

Other clubs you might have in your bag included a niblick, (9-iron), the brassie (2-wood), spoon (3-wood), wooden cleek (5-wood) and sammy (utility club with a rounded back).

The only clubs whose names survive today, ironically, are two unnumbered clubs the putter and the driver. Oh, the wedge had yet to be invented.

These relics were on display at TCC last week, promoting the US Amateur?s return to Brookline on the 100th anniversary of the young amateur?s 1913 US Open playoff victory over English supermen Harry Vardon and Ted Ray.

It was monumental. The victory placed golf on the front page of newspapers for the first time and inspired a generation to take up the game.

To this day, the unlikely victory in 1913 is celebrated among the greatest moments in American sports history.

After his victory, Ouimet gave his clubs to Eddie Lowery, his 10-year-old caddie, who years later sold them to a good friend.

In 2007, the USGA, who already had Ouimet?s putter in its museum, was fortunate to acquire these clubs from a Connecticut couple who had obtained the clubs from Lowery's friend and subsequently cared for them for some 25 years.

Of the four clubs, the jigger stands out as perhaps the most important,

It was used to play two of the most important shots of the championship.

In the fourth round, Ouimet needed to birdie one of the two finishing two holes to tie Vardon and Ray.

He knocked his jigger on to the17th hole green, just 15 feet from the flagstick and made the putt for a birdie 3.

?And in the playoff, again at No. 17, now leading Vardon by one stroke and Ray by five, Ouimet rifled his approach to 20 feet and made the birdie putt to insured his victory.

You could say he knew the 17th green like is his backyard, probably because he lived not 100 yards away from the green and often snuck on in the early morning and at sunset for practice..

And who knows, if Ouimet?s victory didn?t capture working class America?s heart, the game might have been regulated to the backburner, such as other foreign sports as polo, cricket and soccer.
