OTHS football players stand vigil outside teacher meeting

Ottawa Township High School teachers who arrived to discuss contract negotiations Tuesday afternoon at the Knights of Columbus Hall were met with one group that cares deeply about preventing a repeat of the school's 2009 strike.

Sixteen members of the school's football team stood outside the hall, greeting and sometimes talking to teachers ? including coaches ? who arrived.

"There's one reason why we're here," said linebacker Garrett Hoffman, 17, a senior. "We want them to see what they could ruin."

All the players are aware how the strike devastated the 2009 fall sports program.

For the football team, the strike meant having to forfeit the last four games of the season. So for the current team members, the possibility of a strike is a serious concern.

"We really don't know what to expect," said Hoffman. "We just hate to see our football season ruined by something like this."

The students said they intended to be on vigil every time the teachers meet.
