Russian-Chinese Naval Cooperation Will Continue, Commanders Say

At a press conference concluding the second and largest naval drill conducted by China and Russia in the Peter the Great Gulf near the city of Vladivostok, both commanders judged the exercise a success and indicated that they will become a permanent part of the regional security landscape in the Far East. "We have safely accomplished all the designed subjects under complex weather conditions," said Adm. Ding Yiping, the deputy commander of the PLA Navy. "According to primary evaluations, we did a great job." "The two countries made an in-depth discussion on deepening mutual cooperation, which had a great significance on their development and improvement," Ding said.

He was seconded by Admiral Leonid Sukhanov, the Deputy Chief of the Russian Navy Main Staff, the Russian commander in the exercise, who said that the two countries work together at any time to address maritime threats and to secure their countries. "Some countries believe our exercise is for regional stability while some countries hold different views, but I think that it has sent an example for the other countries in safeguarding regional security and each other's national interests," Sukhanov said. The importance attached to the drill by the Russian side was indicated by the presence of the Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy, Adm. Viktor Chirkov, who reviewed the fleet from the cruiser Varyag. Admiral Ding indicated that he had spoken to Admiral Chirkov regarding other joint maneuvers in the near future.
