The Gold Cup began in disastrous fashion for Mexico, but their performance against Canada put them in a position to advance to the quarterfinals comfortably and avoid the United States in the process. However, they were less than impressive in their win over the Canucks and it's unlikely that Martinique are going to be a complete walkover.
Martinique outplayed Canada for the entirety of their first match, though they needed a miracle volley in stoppage time to clinch the winner. They were solid again against Panama, but appeared to tire late in the game and gave away an 84th minute penalty to drop all three points. Their performances in their first two games suggest that they can give El Tri problems, though they have lost striker Frederic Piquionne, who has returned to his club team Portland Timbers.
A group win is not out of the question for Mexico, but they need help. Canada need to defeat Panama for them to have a chance to finish top of Group A, and based on the way Canada have played thus far in this tournament, that seems unlikely.
